4.2 Stage Setting

Here are five assumptions that will not be questioned in the rest of the chapter. They will allow me to formulate more precisely the problem sketched in Sect. 4.1.

First assumption: to keep the renewed Tortoise problem clearly distinct from the initial one, I will assume that all classical rules of inference are in force. This implies, as before, that we do not need to invoke the following premise in order to obtain ‘q’ from the premises ‘p’ and ‘if p, then q’:(c)If p and [if p, then q], then q.
